Tell me about the erotics of radio

Voices enter into another through vibration.
The body is a meadow, not a fortress.

The distance of radio enhances these erotics.
And the microphone, radio tower, machine, satellite.

To be entered by someone you will never see
separated by a wall of distance and sonic engineering.

Writing to you, I picture the end of Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country when Shimamura looks up at the sky with an open mouth and the Milky Way enters into him with a roar.

All that ritual punctuation written on a mirror.
The same indivisible sentence.

But what of the tone of the night preacher’s voice,
the static and the song of the sierreño moving within?

It is practically a theology by now.
The senses detect the fire in everything.

According to certain saints not even the thinnest veneer separates the Milky Way from dirt; the meadow, the mouth; and if we see it, a science begins in which even a star’s warm departure can be red.

The same saints in the desert who would walk backwards, or be naked, or bark like dogs to show that they answered to god’s law alone

they said:

“when we fall to earth we know all the secrets of the universe,
but we forget them as we age”

Which is to say, as we gain language, we solidify our relationship to the earth

Still

it seems impossible that signals pass through us all the time

and do not harm our cellular bodies

(don’t worry, I am not a 5G conspiracy theorist)

it’s just that

how can we be filled with radio waves or god or another’s body and have our cells contain

their ecstasy.

On its face the body’s signal,
beneath that: mostly noise.

In naming, some believe G-d comes
into being. A little lingo in the digits

and wrist. That’s how my baby’s
knowing congeals into signs.

In Safed, in Palestine, it has long been speculated that G-d’s departure made room for the finitudes of creation. Whether flowing out in tides or contracting to a point, it’s us, the little o, the earth, that remains in the wake of G-d’s long withdrawal.
